Top tips on how to become a model

Ever wondered how you can become a model?

Here at RMG, we receive around 100 applications a day, so it’s important to stand out before you’re walking amongst the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid.

But we are renowned for representing 15 categories of models of all ages, ethnicities and body types along with a wide range of creatives. We’re proud to be making a difference in the modelling world. 

  1. Finding your niche

Consider the type of model you want to become. There are a variety of choices, from commercial modelling and fitness, to hand models. There’s something out there for everyone.

  1. Understand what’s required for the job

Models must work hard to look their best. Our clients select models with healthy hair, teeth, skin and nails. A healthy diet, regular exercise and general TLC are all essential. What you wear is also important, but looking great is only half the job. Professional conduct is imperative at all times. Time management and organisational skills are also essential tools required to build a successful career within the fashion industry, as well as having a positive mental attitude, Confidence is key!

  1. Have professional headshots and create a portfolio

Building a strong professional portfolio that showcases your talent is essential. Whether you hire an experienced photographer or use your phone, make sure you get a variety of headshots and body shots to highlight your features. You want to be as natural as possible. Organise your portfolio so it highlights your abilities and strengths to potential agencies.

  1. Always do your research

Before you do anything, make sure you research any potential agencies. Check that they are legitimate and represent your vision and values as a model. Luckily, there are handy websites that provide a list of approved agencies, giving your more confidence in your decision.

  1. Never give up!

No matter how big or small you are within the industry, rejection can be a common occurrence. Whether you don’t hear back or are turned away, don’t lose your momentum. You may not be what they are looking for that moment in time, but you might someone else’s perfect choice.

  1. Attend as many castings as possible

Go for every opportunity. Remember, being a model is the same as having your own business. The product is YOU. There are lots of other models hoping to get the job, so competition is fierce, and standards today are higher than ever, so be prepared to work hard, develop your determination and stay focused.
